Icon of Modernism : The Bauhaus Building Dessau

Icon of Modernism : The Bauhaus Building Dessau

The Bauhaus building in Dessau, Germany, is not just an Icon of Modernism but an international media star: ever since December 4, 1926, when Walter Gropius dedicated this building for his world-famous school of design, hundreds of magazines, books, postcards and even advertising campaigns have imprinted its image in people's minds. Of late the Bauhaus building has come to be seen as somewhat of an aging star, but on this, its eightieth anniversary, its long restoration process has finally come to an end. This compilation of photographs and documentation illuminates the complex renovation process, which--by means of meticulous architectural research and careful handling of surfaces and historical traces--has not only revealed the history of the building's uses, which have been important in themselves, but also opened up new perspectives on a unique architectural and philosophical treasure.

2008 art calendars

Judy Chicago The Dinner Party 2008 Wall Calendar
The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago is a monumental multimedia artwork honoring women’s achievements in history through a series of place settings at a dinner table. Each of thirty-nine goddesses and historical figures—among them Sappho, Sojourner Truth, Emily Dickinson, Petronilla de Meath, and Georgia O’Keeffe—is represented on a fourteen-inch painted-china plate that rests upon an elaborately needleworked runner evoking the time in which the woman lived. Each month of this calendar depicts a place setting or an element from a place setting for one of the honored women.

Wolf Kahn (American, b. Germany 1927) uses the seen world as a starting place for investigating the power of harmonic colors. Paradoxically, given that he often works in nearly violent colors, his paintings are wonderfully tranquil; exercises in chromatic tension and formal movement, they are also sharply evocative of real-world woodlots, pastures, and weathered farm buildings. This calendar features Six Cypresses, Blue Ridge in the Distance, The Green Bush, and nine other spectacular paintings.

Mark Spain 2008 Wall Calendar
Printmaker and artist Mark Spain received the Up and Coming Published Artist Award after two years of his successful relationship with Washington Green. Inspired by music, his rhythmic contemplations of the figure, movement and emotion are striking and true. Enjoy this new wall calendar from Mark Spain, one of the Washington Green artists.

Sarah Jane Szikora 2008 Wall Calendar
Sarah Jane Szikora’s charming and humorous paintings are simply divine, full of bright colors and hilarious situations that are sure to please. One cannot help but smile at these images that Szikora lovingly describes as derived from real life: “I draw my ideas from simply observing people and human behavior.” BrownTrout is pleased to present this talented Washington Green artist in this 2008 wall calendar.

Emily Carr 2008 Wall Calendar
British Columbia’s wilderness and First Nations culture were the great themes of Emily Carr’s work. Through her landscapes and haunting depictions of totems, she is deservedly considered the premier painter of Canada’s Pacific Coast. Carr (1871) produced an impressive body of images in the year 1912. After a prolonged period of inactivity, she returned to northern British Columbia and began painting the canvases for which she is most noted. Among the images in this calendar: Totem Poles, Kitseukla; Deep Forest; and Cedar Sanctuary.

Rene Magritte 2008 Wall Calendar
Rene Magritte is one of the world's most well known surrealist painters; his work is timeless and never fails to capture and engage our imagination. Twelve of his most striking and thought-provoking paintings are featured in this beautiful calendar.

M.C. Escher Rational Unreality 2008 Wall Calendar
With no mathematical background, working on his own, Escher realized principles in his graphics that caught the attention of scientists working in crystallography-the audience that first began to make him famous. This calendar features twelve examples of Escher’s hypnotic works, which once surprised and delighted the world of mathematics. Images include Cycle, Doric Columns, Depth, Ascending and Descending, and others.

Scott Mutter 2008 Wall Calendar
Scott Mutter’s photomontages have an eerie, dreamlike quality created by melding two disparate images into a surprising new reality. Spend a year of intrigue and introspection with these remarkable images.

Thomas Barbey 2008 Wall Calendar
Beachcombers walking along the bottom of a swimming pool. Carousel horses leaping off the carousel. Lightning striking a guitar that’s become Trevi Fountain. Welcome to the surreal world of photographer Thomas Barbèy. His challenging and captivating photomontages in this year’s calendar—including never-before-published Sunbathing and new and bestselling Horsing-Around and Striking a Chord—will fill your year with wonder.

Maggie Taylor Landscape of Dreams 2008 Wall Calendar
Birds ride bicycles, boys and girls morph into cats, dogs and moths and prim, Victorian women sprout wings, flowers and other found objects. Maggie Taylor's digital collages are best described as contemporary surrealism—contemporary through her use of today's digital tools in constructing them and surreal in their dreamlike quality presenting a strange, parallel universe.

Alex Grey 2008 Wall Calendar
Every once in a great while an artist emerges who does more than simply reflect the social trends of the time. These artists are able to transcend established thinking and help us redefine ourselves and our world. Today, a growing number of art critics, philosophers, and spiritual seekers believe they have found that vision in the art of Alex Grey.
Alex's paintings take the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual anatomy of the self. Grey's portrayals of human beings blend scientific exactitude with visionary depictions of universal life energy, leading us on the soul's journey of our divinely illuminated core.
